Be Fit Challenge's You to Take the Stairs by Jackie Maxwell, Be Fit Intern
Do you think about taking the stairs but end up waiting for the elevator out of convenience? Well, that’s about to change because Be Fit is challenging you to take the stairs!
There are so many health benefits to taking the stairs and it doesn’t take any longer than using an elevator. Climbing stairs brings several immediate benefits such as burning 8 – 11 calories a minute which is 10 times more than you would burn if you rode the elevator. By taking the stairs, you’re increasing your physical activity which helps boosts confidence, decreases stress and tension and improves breathing by increasing aerobic capacity. Taking the stairs also increases leg strength and reduces chance of lower body injuries. Climbing just 2 flights of stairs a day can lead to a 5 – 6lb weight loss in one year!
Taking the stairs also offers some long term health benefits as well. A new study estimates that seven minutes of stair climbing everyday can reduce your risk of developing heart disease by about 60 percent. This is because climbing stairs increases the amount of HDL (good cholesterol) in the blood. Taking the stairs also reduces the risk of osteoporosis due to increased bone density and it’s also been shown to lower your mortality rate when you walk more than 55 floors per week.
Have you ever really thought about how long it takes to use the elevator? First you have to wait for the elevator to arrive on your floor. Once the elevator finally comes 10 people pile in all wanting to stop at different floors and you are the last stop. Wouldn’t it just be easier to take the stairs? You would save time and improve your health, so what’s stopping you? Be Fit’s “Take the Stairs” challenge offers an incentive to get you climbing. When you sign up, you also choose a mountain you like to climb through taking the stairs. Your choice of mountain should be based on how many floors of stairs you think you can climb during the challenge. The first five people to get to the top of their mountain will win either a month gym membership or a $25 gift card to the Eat Street Café.
Be Fit’s “Take the Stairs” challenge begins March 10 and lasts 8 weeks. We encourage you and your friends to sign up and take the challenge. How many stairs will you climb everyday? Will you get to the top of the mountain first? You’ll have to sign up and start Taking the Stairs!
Interested participants should e mail Jackie Maxwell at jmaxwell1@partners.org and check back soon for the new Stair Challenge web page on the Be Fit site!
